The LaGG-3 was developed from the LaGG-1 in early 1941, although a good design the aircraft was let down by shoddy manufacturing (the initials were said to stand for Lakirovannii Garantirovannii Grob "varnished guaranteed coffin") but despite it's reputation over 6,500 were made by 1942, when production was switched over to the La-5
In 1942 a La-3 was tested with two VDR-430 fitted under the wings, as with other experiments of the same sort, the top speed was boosted (in this case by 30 km/h) but when not in use the speed was reduced (by 50 km/h).
