The jet powered successor the
the P-47 "Thunderbolt" design work started in 1944. Ordered in early 1945
by the USAAF, the first of three prototypes flew on the 28/2/1946, with
the second prototype ready in August 1946. The 400 aircraft which were ordered
being different to the prototypes by having the Allison J35-A-15 turbojet
engine (instead of the General Electric J35-GE-7), provision for wing tip
tanks and 6x 0.50'' machine guns. Known as the YF-84A it was the start of
a long and successful service life. |
